Unit 4.24 – Troubleshooting: cont’d Copy

Hyperpigmentation and Hypopigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs most frequently in darker skinned people and can be caused by any inflammation to the skin. The other causes, for example ingrown hairs, plucking and acne scarring, must be differentiated from electrolysis. Hyperpigmentation occurs less frequently in lighter skinned people and usually clears within a few days or weeks. Hyperpigmentation of this type in darker skinned people is usually permanent.

Hypopigmentation, lessening or loss of pigment, is uncommon and usually corrects itself within a few weeks.

Treatment and prevention:
• Use the blend or galvanic method on darker skinned people.
• Use lower intensities for darker skinned people and scatter the work.
• Reduce treatment time.
• Advise the client to avoid the sun or solaria for two weeks.
• Advise the client to use a full spectrum sun block if they are going to be exposed to the sun.

Folliculitis
This is inflammation around the mouth of the follicle; its appearance may mimic acne. Folliculitis occurs most frequently in individuals with ingrown hairs or acne or other irritations. It is difficult to distinguish folliculitis occurring from electrolysis from folliculitis developing from other irritations.

Treatment and prevention:
• Pay special care to electrolysis technique.
• Acne sufferers should seek appropriate treatment first.
• Avoid using an oily aftercare treatment.
• Avoid using water on the area as this can flood the follicles and provide a breeding ground for bacteria.
• Clients should avoid plucking or waxing.

Local swelling
Swelling is an indication of tissue irritation and occurs most frequently on the upper lip if the duration of electrolysis is too long. It usually settles after a few hours but can take up to a few days.

Treatment and prevention:
• Never treat for more than 30 minutes on the upper lip, especially in the first two or three visits.
• Reduce intensity and duration.
• Scatter the work.
• A cold cotton compress or soothing lotion will help reduce the swelling.
